Indoor scenes and night photography are where this lens has made the biggest difference for me. The 20mm view captures plenty of the surroundings without making a room feel cramped, and the f/1.4 aperture gives me much more freedom when available light is limited. I can photograph dimly lit streets and interiors while keeping shutter speeds practical, which makes spontaneous shooting far less frustrating.
One thing I noticed early on is how much detail it resolves, even when I include objects near the edges of the frame. Architecture, landscape scenes, and environmental portraits all benefit from the broad perspective. Straight lines can still show distortion depending on the angle and subject, but careful positioning helps me achieve a natural-looking result.
The physical controls are another plus. Adjusting focus and making quick exposure changes feels intuitive, and the dedicated aperture control is useful when I want to change settings without taking my eye away from the scene. The lens feels sturdy and well assembled, with the sort of construction I expect from Canon's professional L-series gear.
For video, the wide view works especially well when I want to show a location rather than isolate one subject. The VCM focusing system responds quietly and quickly in my experience, and focus transitions are suitable for the kind of footage I typically record. I also appreciate the control layout when switching between still photography and video during the same outing.
There is some weight to it, and it takes up a fair amount of room compared with smaller prime lenses. Still, I find the size reasonable for a fast, professional-grade optic with such a broad field of view. The front element and filter arrangements also deserve a little attention when choosing how to protect it, particularly on dusty outdoor shoots.
What keeps me reaching for it is its versatility without sacrificing light-gathering ability. I can use it for dramatic landscapes, indoor events, environmental portraits, and video projects without feeling limited to one particular style. It is a serious investment, but the optical performance, solid construction, and useful controls make it a satisfying choice for my Canon RF kit.
